Typical Sicilian carriage hand decorated, Cefalu, Sicily - Italy
The Carretto Siciliano (or carrettu sicilianu in Sicilian) is a lavishly decorated and colorful, horse-drawn cart, symbolic of the folklore of Sicily.
The ancient Greeks brought the carts to the country. Carts hit the height of their success in the 1920s, when thousands of tourists were on the island. Miniature sicilian carriages, or Carrettini Siciliani, are also marketed as souvenirs in Sicily (or in Italian shops and restaurants in other countries).
The Sicilian Carretto is produced in a variety of provinces in Sicily, each in its own theme. Carretti manufactured in the province of Palermo are more of a square box shape, those produced in Catania are manufactured with more intricate 'keys,' and then there are carts produced in Agrigento that are their own distinctive look.
The practice of producing carts has been passed down from generation to generation, by the teaching of apprentices. Carts are considered...
